In the 1800's Men were the only people who could buy or inherit homes. When a father would die the home would go to the oldest son in the family and the women would get whatever that son felt like giving them. In the story Mr. Dashwood gives his land to his oldest son, but also tells him to give his money to his girls.
Women were almost considered slaves at this point in time. They were only there to take care of men and to have children. Society usually frowned down upon the women who were never married. Although this was not a common occurrence that happened often it did happen sometimes. The women who did get married had a very hard time finding somebody they wanted to marry. If their partners were not picked for them to gain money the woman getting married hd to have a note that said they could meet a certain person.
